Simple home made hand sanitizer
Washing your hands just with common soap for 20 to 30 seconds is sufficient enough to kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus. But there are situations where you can not wash your hands as necessary. In the supermarket, where you touch the basket, the handle of the fridges and many others. In such acute situations using your hand sanitizer from your pocket is very comfortable.
You can make sanitizer for using on your hands very easy by your own. To kill the virus effectively the following facts have to be fulfilled.
- Alcohol concentration must be between 65 and 80 percent
- Against SARS-CoV-2 viruses use it for about 30 seconds
Formula for 100 ml
- 90 ml Ethanol (Ethylalcohol) 70%
- 5 – 10 ml Aloe Vera juice, coconut oil or similar
- 3 – 5 drops essential oil
Aloe vera nourishes your skin. It is antibacterial by itself. Use vegetable oils as replacement. The antiviral effect comes from the alcohol, which must be in the concentration written above.
I make aloe juice from my own huge aloe plant by cutting off a leaf, cutting out the gel from the skin, mixing it in the machine and sieve it. Maybe you can find pure aloe gel in the supermarket or in the health-food shop nearby.
Essential oils are for a perfumed smell. Some hav by itself antibacerial and antiviral effect:
- Lemongrass
- Ginger
- Cinnamon
- Pepermint
- and more
All together the sanitizer is very liquid. Best you put it into a convenient bottle for small dosage. The picture above shows an old crème bottle with pump (not spray).
Where to find Ethanol
Ethylalcohol is available in 70% and 96% denatured (no alcohol tax) at the drugstore and at pharmacies. Pharmacies who produce still their own drugs have it in 5 litre canister to take from.
